a beastie intro to violet crown

I finally made it out to Violet Crown Cinema!  And although it took that long, I will definitely be back soon and often.  Austin is lucky enough to be the home of Alamo Drathouse, a movie theatre chain where you can watch a movie and order off a lengthy menu, which includes a full bar and specialty dishes and cocktails depending on the movies currently shown (for example, Magic Mike brought drink specials like the Banana Hammock).  Violet Crown is the same sort of concept, although you order beforehand and bring your food and drink into the theater, where you can rest it on a little folding sidetable (not unlike that on an old-fashioned desk).  The chairs are big and cushy and seats are all assigned-- so you can actually choose where you sit when you buy your tickets online.  There is also more of a focus on arthouse, independent films at Violet Crown.

I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but I ordered this pesto dog (all-beef hot dog, pesto, roasted red pepper, fresh mozzarella, and basil) pictured below and it was tasty and just the thing I wanted to be eating during a movie.

We saw "Beasts of the Southern Wild" which was incredible...I cried during parts that weren't even supposed to be sad (like the "Beast it!" crab scene...no, really)!  The movie was incredibly visceral and left a lasting impression on me.  Granted, I am a sucker for child narrators...particularly adorable little girls with afros and names like Hushpuppy!  Do yourself a favor and SEE THIS MOVIE.  It's the best thing I've seen in a long time.

("Beasts" was made by Court 13, a group of filmmakers out of New Orleans who use real people and locations rather than actors and sets.. much like the Danish group Dogme 95.  I'm going to keep my eye on these Court 13'ers... I'm sure this is the one of many more masterpieces to come..)
