You may remember my trip to Round Rock Honey to take part in a beekeeping class this June. Well, that was just some of the research I did for a beekeeping feature that just came out in issue #2 of Citygram magazine. Click on this link for a preview , but for the full interactive (and graphically amazing!) version, you must download Citygram for iPad or iPhone (it's a free app at this point, but maybe not for long!)
That night, I attended a farm-focused dinner for Citygram at Swoop House where the lovely Leanne Valenti prepared a four course meal, each course using ingredients from a different neighboring farm: mustard greens, sorrel, arugula, honey-glazed onion, fig ham, and cornmeal croutons from Boggy Creek Farm; adobo pork tamales with pickled onion, salsa roja, and fresh herbs from Rain Lily Farm; chile-roasted chicken, goat-cheese filled nopal relleno, black beans, and cucumber peach pico from HausBar Farms, and a duck egg custard pot de creme with preserved mango, cajeta popcorn from Springdale Farm. The farmers mingled with us for happy hour while the sunny bartender mixed us blood orange/mango/guava drinks and chilled the bottles of wine we'd all brought to enjoy with dinner.
The Swoop House is a restored home that actually used to be located in Hyde Park! I'd somehow never been inside this space, though it now lives only blocks from my house. All sorts of edible plants surround the house, which welcomes you in like a friend's. Inside, the decor is subtly bohemian and the lighting is beautiful. It was the perfect spot for a late summer gathering, where we raised a glass to issue two of Citygram! Now go download it so you can find out about events like this dinner before they happen!
